Apply for Independent Menthol Outreach Coordinator
Period of Performance: February 2023 - June 30, 2023 with the possibility of an extension.
Menthol Outreach Coordinator for the Wisconsin African American Tobacco Prevention Network
Background:
Jump at the Sun Consultants, LLC is an African American, woman–owned firm established in 2007 to address health disparities.
Our Mission: to provide innovative and culturally relevant technical support to non-profit, public health and private sector organizations working to improve the well being of low-income families and individuals.
Our Vision: A world of hope, tolerance and social justice, where everyone lives in dignity and has an equal opportunity to achieve optimal health. Since 2008, we have been responsible for implementing the Wisconsin Department of Health Services sponsored Wisconsin African American Tobacco Prevention Network (WAATPN) and Wisconsin Tobacco Prevention and Poverty Network (WTPPN). Our work is focused on coalition-building to combat tobacco disparities, thereby preventing and reducing death, disease, and health care costs caused by tobacco use. Our efforts are pursued through a health equity, social determinants and social justice framework.
Tobacco Exposure and Use in African American Communities:
Decades of aggressive tobacco company targeting and retail saturation have directly contributed to the three leading causes of death among African Americans—heart disease, cancer, and stroke. Each year, 45,000 African Americans die from smoking related diseases in the United States. The adult prevalence of smoking in WI’s general population is 16%, while in the African American adult population it is 26%. The Faith-based Coordinator will work with our community partners to address this disparity.
Scope of work:
The Contractor will perform the following activities:
1. Serve as the primary point of contact and liaison for all faith-based activities and support menthol outreach of the Wisconsin African American Tobacco Prevention Network (WAATPN).
2. Support the work of the WAATPN Menthol Subcommittee which is focused on No Menthol Sunday and the Menthol Learning Collaborative.
3. Provide training, support, resources and materials for all WAATPN faith-based partners to support them in raising awareness in their congregations and the general public about tobacco disparities and the targeting of African American and low socioeconomic status communities by the tobacco industry.
4. Convene at least one virtual training and/or educational event and 2 in person meetings for the WAATPN faith-based partners and faith-based organizations at-large.
5. Support faith-based partners in participating in media advocacy activities (storytelling, letters to the editor, print/radio and television interviews, etc.)
6. Participate as a member of the WAATPN/WTPPN prevention and education core team (e.g. attend team meetings, participate in client meetings, etc.) and support these networks in achieving strategic partnerships and strategic goals and objectives with an emphasis on health equity and social justice.
